Our Spellers' Journey
- 1Classroom Bees
From January to February, thousands of students competed in their classrooms to place into their school bees.
- 2Regional/School Bees
From February to March, the top spellers competed in school and regional bees to qualify for the national competition in Ottawa.
- 3Preparation
Hundreds of top spellers from across Canada get their word lists and prepare for the national competition in Ottawa.
- 4The National Bee
The best spellers compete in Ottawa for the national championship and prizes.
Our Story

The Canada Super Spelling Bee is committed to fostering a love for spelling and learning among students. We hope our story exemplifies our dedication at every step of the way.
2018
2018
Canada Super Spelling Bee was founded in 2018 after Jaden Zhang competed in the Scripps National Spelling Bee and wanted to bring the same joyous experience to Canadian students.
There was much more to spelling bees than just memorizing words, and he wanted to create a platform that would help students experience a bee community.


2019
2019
The Canada Super Spelling Bee hosts its first competition at Immaculata High School with 48 spellers. Sriram Hathwar, a 2014 Scripps National Spelling Bee co-champion, was the guest pronouncer and Paul Hamrick, a Scripps finalist, was the guest head judge.
The bee was a huge success, with Timothy Riscalas, a grade 8 from Immaculata Catholic High School, being declared champion. The community continued to grow with more students and parents getting involved.



2020
2020
Canada Super Spelling Bee goes online, holding the first ever online Canadian National Spelling Bee and International Spelling Bee in 2020. The event attracted over 80 participants from across Canada. Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson provided a congratulatory video to Canada Super Spelling Bee and the participants.
Canada Super Spelling Bee also donated all proceeds from the competitions to Ottawa hospitals to help with the COVID-19 pandemic.


2021
2021
Canada Super Spelling Bee hosts over 50 world-class international spellers for their online international competition. Many of their champions, like Zaila Avantgard, went on to win the Scripps National Spelling Bee as well.
This year also saw many VIP judges and pronouncers, including many of the Scripps National Spelling Bee Octochamps.
2022
2022
The bee community continues to grow, with more students and parents getting involved. Canada Super Spelling Bee prepares to go back in-person for the first time since 2019.
2023
2023
The Canada National Super Spelling Bee is back in person, with hundreds of school spellers working hard to prepare for the competition at the Nepean Sportsplex in Ottawa.
The bee also received national recognition, with the Prime Minister of Canada and Premier of Ontario sending letters of appreciation and congratulations to CSSB and spellers. Additionally, the bee received coverage from Rogers News and CTV News, showcasing the dedication and hard work of the spellers.

2024
Over 10K school spellers from across Canada are recorded to be competing for the top spots at the Canada National Super Spelling Bee being held at Algonquin College.
Early 2025
Early 2025
Over 30K school spellers from across Canada are expected to be competing for the top spots at the Canada National Spelling Bee being held at the Nepean Sportsplex in Ottawa.
The bee also holds its first ever round of regional competitions in Newfoundland and Labrador, with the St. John's Elks Club organizing an incredibly successful bee.
We look forward to seeing what's in store for the future of the Canada Super Spelling Bee and the Canadian spelling bee community!
